When couples remarry and bring with them children from a previous relationship or partner, they form a step-family. Step-families are unique and often complex family structures that affect members on several levels: individually, between romantic partners and within the caregiving system between parent and child. In EFT, distress in stepfamilies is conceptualized as attachment dilemmas. As couples therapists, we often see couples struggle to come together around blending their families and step family dynamics.
For example, many conflicts following re-partnering can be traced to attachment losses activated by the introduction of a step-parent. EFT offers a treatment map to work with negative interactional patterns triggered by these attachment struggles that can divide the new couple and alienate the child.
