The People of Alaska
Alaska's demographics consist of about 731,000 people, with approximately 15.6% identifying as Alaska Native or American Indian, making them the largest Native group. The state has a small, diverse population spread across vast, remote areas. Urban centers like Anchorage hold the majority, but many Alaska Natives live in rural, isolated communities.
Alaska also has a significant military presence, with several large bases, including Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and Eielson Air Force Base.
The state's strategic location, close to the Arctic and Asia-Pacific regions, makes it a vital area for military operations. Additionally, Alaska has a high population of first responders, as the state's remote geography and harsh climate demand a strong network of emergency personnel to ensure the safety of its residents, often responding to situations in isolated and extreme environments.
Get to Know What Make Us Unique
Winter in Alaska is long, cold, and dark, with temperatures often dropping below freezing, particularly in northern regions. The extended darkness and harsh weather conditions create challenges for residents, including increased isolation and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Alaska has higher rates of mental health issues, including depression and substance abuse, linked to the state's geographic isolation, economic hardships, and extreme weather conditions. Access to mental health services can be limited, especially in rural areas, further contributing to mental health challenges.

Alaska Natives face unique challenges tied to historical trauma, cultural dislocation, and the loss of traditional lifestyles. They experience higher rates of poverty, substance abuse, and mental health disorders, often exacerbated by limited access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. This makes them a particularly underserved population, requiring culturally sensitive services and support.
